PSY 224 Introduction to Nonprofit Field

This experiential course is designed to introduce undergraduate students to the non-profit field through a theory-to-practice service-learning model. The academic course will explore both theoretical and practical aspects of the nonprofit field, exposing students to models and examples in the local and national community.

This course will explore the roles and responsibilities of the philanthropic and nonprofit sector. We will cover topics such as fiscal responsibility, grant writing, understanding community needs, and how the nonprofit sector addresses those needs. Representatives from philanthropic, civic, and community organizations will be guest speakers in our class to share their expertise.

Additionally, students will spend time outside of the classroom to engage with local nonprofits and learn about the people they serve. For their final project, students will complete a grant application on behalf of a nonprofit serving the New Britain community and present their work to a panel of American Savings Foundation staff and board members. Two nonprofit organizations will receive $5,000 each through the generous contribution of American Savings Foundation.
