2024-2025 Undergraduate/Graduate Catalog

African-American Studies Minor

Program Overview

The African-American studies minor offers a broad curriculum dedicated to the study of Black life in the Americas and the Diaspora from 1350 to the present. The African-American studies program develops and coordinates an interdisciplinary curriculum. Its objectives are to encourage all students and faculty to examine the African-American experience, to facilitate a cultural and intellectual atmosphere on campus that will be favorable to such studies, and to develop a program of research and community service. The program also has a nationally recognized African-American lecture series, featuring nationally and internationally known scholars in the field of Black studies. In addition to the ongoing lecture series, the program also hosts the traditional celebration of Black History Month during February with rich and diverse activities such as a film series, art exhibits, and student debating contests.
